HOT MIX ASPHALT
GEML offers hot mix asphalt paving mixtures, which are produced from a wide range of aggregate combinations, each having its own characteristics suited to an engineered asphalt concrete mix design.
General Earth Movers Ltd. (G.E.M.L.) produces supplies & installs Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) using engineered asphalt concrete mix designs best suited/specified to our clients. The mix design determines the proportioning of aggregate and bitumen components satisfying Marshall Criteria and Volumetric Properties of Binder/Base courses.
General Earth Movers Ltd. is a one stop shop for Asphalt, as we provide the following for our clients:
- Aggregates necessary for Hot Mix Asphalt
- Bituminous Oils
- Milling Machines
- Asphalt Plant
- Pavers of various sizes
- Rollers
- Asphalt Crew & tools
- Quality Control Engineers
- Surveying instrumentation
- Density Testing Equipment
Features and Benefits of Hot Mix Asphalt
- Weather-Resistant – Asphalt is used across the nation for a reason; it can resist all types of weather. Hot mix asphalt can stand up to wind, flooding, and asphalt’s heat absorption melts snow and ice faster than other paving materials.
- Quick Cool Down – Hot mix asphalt is poured at over 300 degrees, but it cools down quickly, allowing for minimal road closure times. Because hot mix asphalt cools so quickly, you can get the road open and traffic flowing in as little as a few hours.
- Strength – Hot mix asphalt is the most durable grade of paving asphalt, which is why it’s used for high traffic roads and highways. Cold mix asphalt isn’t strong enough for regular vehicle traffic.
- Bend but Not Break – Asphalt is more flexible than it’s paving counterpart concrete. Asphalt’s flexibility and malleability allow it to shrink and expand during different temperatures without cracking or becoming damaged. This flexible factor makes it a great paving choice in areas that suffer fluctuating temperatures.
COLD MIX ASPHALT
Cold mix asphalt is, just like hot mix asphalt, a combination of aggregates and cutback or bitumen emulsion, commonly used on low traffic roads or rural roads. Cold mix asphalt is produced by emulsifying the asphalt with water and an emulsifier agent, before mixing it with aggregates, to make the asphalt less viscous so that the mix is easier to work with. The mix could be the one comprising of bitumen emulsion, and virgin aggregates or reclaimed asphalt pavements/milled pavements, though the latter would be cost effective. They are used for repairing potholes as well as worn out flexible pavements. Cold mix asphalt also works along flexible pavements and can be produced, either on-site or at mixing plants.
Features and Benefits of Hot Mix Asphalt
- Control over characteristics such as set time, mix time and strength
- Environmentally friendly, emission free
- Economical: eliminates the need to dry or heat aggregate
- Safety: cold emulsions are safer than super-heated asphalt cements
- Cost effective way to maximize the life of the road
